When you're ready to seek psychiatric care, one of the first questions is often: does it matter whether I see someone in person or online?

The short answer: for most people and most conditions, no — it does not matter much. But understanding the differences helps you make the best choice for your situation.

What the Research Shows

Studies comparing telepsychiatry to in-person psychiatric care consistently find equivalent outcomes across a wide range of conditions, including:

  • Depression and bipolar disorder
  • Anxiety and panic disorder
  • ADHD (in adults and children)
  • PTSD and trauma-related conditions
  • Medication management

A 2020 review published in Psychiatric Services found that telepsychiatry was as effective as in-person care and was associated with higher patient satisfaction — largely because of reduced travel burden and greater scheduling flexibility.

Advantages of Telepsychiatry

Convenience. No commute, no parking, no waiting room. You attend from your home, office, or anywhere private.

Access. If you live in a rural area, have mobility limitations, or simply cannot take time off work for appointments, telehealth removes significant barriers.

Consistency. Patients who use telepsychiatry tend to keep more appointments — which translates directly to better outcomes.

Privacy. For many people, there is a comfort in speaking with a provider from their own space.

When In-Person May Be Preferred

  • TMS therapy requires you to be physically present at a treatment center for each session
  • Certain diagnostic procedures may require an in-person evaluation
  • Some individuals simply feel more comfortable meeting face-to-face — and that preference matters

Our Approach

At Segal Telepsychiatry Network, we provide comprehensive psychiatric care via secure video for residents of California, Florida, and New York. Our board-certified psychiatrists and nurse practitioners conduct full evaluations, diagnose conditions, manage medications, and coordinate with your other providers — all via HIPAA-compliant video.

If you need TMS therapy, we coordinate that as part of your overall treatment plan.
